Concentration

Creating the conditions for the mind to settle.
In practice
  • Breathing slows the mental process down first.
  • Attention exercises, once the mind becomes available.
  • A practice never worked on in isolation.
  • Guided sessions of 30 to 45 minutes.
  • David’s recordings for the other days.
A guided concentration practice
Observation

Why it resists at first

Constant
The mind keeps running, even when the day is over.
Habit
Concentration cannot be improvised without practice beforehand.
Isolation
Worked on alone, concentration quickly becomes difficult.
Effort
Forcing the mind to stop does not produce the intended effect.

When the mind runs non-stop, working directly on concentration can be difficult.

That is why we generally do not work on concentration in isolation. Breathing first slows things down and cuts part of the mental process. We can then add concentration exercises, once the mind is more available.

Creating the conditions rather than forcing

By combining breathing and concentration, we gradually try to create the conditions that let the mind settle, rather than trying to force it to stop.

What it takes

  • A full assessment, before any practice.
  • Practices chosen from that assessment.
  • Regularity, five days a week.
  • Time: four weeks of practice.

These techniques do not work simply because you know them. How well they work depends on the way they are practised, on how regular you are and on the time you give them.

How it works

Breathing opens the way

We do not take the mind head-on: we prepare the ground, then attention.
01
Breathing
It slows the rhythm, then cuts part of the mental process under way.
02
Concentration
Attention exercises come next, combined with the breath, once the mind is more available.
03
The conditions
The mind settles on its own, without us trying to stop it.
